The JR East Passes provides unlimited travel on local JR East train lines from Narita or Haneda Airport to shinkansens and limited express trains in the Eastern region of Japan. Popular destinations with JR East Pass holders are Tokyo, Nikko, Nagano, Niigata and the Tohoku region.

JR East Pass Tohoku Area (Flexible 5 Days)
The JR East Pass Tohoku Area covers unlimited travel on shinkansen and limited express trains in the Kanto and Tohoku area. The pass is ideal for travellers who wish to visit Matsushima and its pine tree forest reflection in the sea considered as Japan's "Three Views", or discover Aomori or Sendai. A day trip to Nikko from Tokyo is also recommended from this pass, or a stop over in Karuizawa and enjoy shopping.
JR East Pass Nagano, Niigata Area (Flexible 5 Days)
The JR East Pass for Nagano and Niigata Area covers the Greater Tokyo area, Nagano, Niigata Prefectures and the Shonai Region of Yamagata Prefecture.
The pass offers unlimited rides on the Tohoku Shinkansen, Yamagata Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, and Hokuriku Shinkansen. Also, rides on the limited express trains on Tobu Direct Limited Express "Nikko", "SPECIA Nikko", "Kinugawa", "SPACIA Kinugawa", and local trains between Shimo Imaichi and Tobu-nikko/Kinugawa onsen stations on the Tobu Railway lines are valid.
The JR East Pass for Nagano and Niigata is ideal for travellers who wish to visit the mountain countryside that's not too far from Tokyo. Nagano is known for its hotsprings, Buddhist pilgrimages and Japanese Alps. Niigata is known for its fishing ports and local products of Japan.
